A Poem of Remembrance

I think this poem is referring to the “good old days” when Summer was about relaxing and enjoying yourself, and not having to go on extravagant vacations to have a great time. It is also about being young, and just living your life without a care in the world, “Far above and away from the softening effects of civilization.” The line “When unicorns were still possible” tells me about when I was little, letting my imagination soar. It makes me remember the summers of just staying home, playing in the backyard, and daydreaming. “When the purpose of knees was to be skinned” definitely reminds me of the summer days I would come home from playing outside and my mom having to fix my banged-up knees.  My favorite part of the poem is “During that summer–which may not have been at all, but has become more real than the one that was–watermelons ruled.” The whole poem to me is summed up in these four lines. It says that in the whole summer that was daydreamed or imagined, watermelons ruled.

Fluoride

In 1945, Grand Rapids, MI, became the first city to fluoridate its water. 11 years later, fluoridation had spread to many other cities and the benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water were clear. Fluoridation is still widespread today, although there is much controversy about it. Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water because they don’t know exactly what fluoride is. Many people are nervous about drinking something they don’t know a lot about, and not knowing how it could be helping or harming them.I think adding fluoride to drinking water is a good idea. The results of adding the element to water have been clearly positive. Fluoride greatly helps dental health by strenghtning tooth enamel and reduces the amount of plaque produced. Overall, the fluoridation of drinking water is a great benefit to people’s health.Separate classes of compounds have been evolved over the years as fluoride sources for drinking water and for toothpastes. The FDA has deemed three decay-preventing compounds that are safe to be in toothpaste: stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate. All three of the compounds are made by Ozark Fluorine Specialties. The trick to making these fluoride compounds is to combine fluoride with a compatible abrasive. Water fluoridation uses a different set of chemicals than the fluoride in toothpaste and mouthwash. The side effects of using fluoride in drinking water that are of most concern to me are the causing of illnesses and possible toxication. Many scientists have said that the fluoride in the water we drink everyday has resulted in illnesses such as cancer and thyroid disease. Fluoride has also been listed as a poison–more poisonous than lead and slightly less poisonous than arsenic. This worries me because the fluoridation in drinking water could be harming people without them knowing the true facts about how it might be adversely effecting them. There is still much disagreement on whether fluoridation is safe and effective today.Sources:http://www.wholywater.com/fluoride.htmlhttp://pubs.acs.org/cen/whatstuff/stuff/7916sci4.html
